Yesterday when I collected the 3 year old form the OAP childminder she was really pleased. No, I mean REALLY pleased.
My boy had managed to zip his coat up all by himself. He’s 3 and to be fair I had never considered what age he should be zipping his own coat up because he has one of those coats which has a fleece zipped in and so many zippy bits that he’s never tried to do it himself.
Anyway, she was really proud. “I’ve never had one of his age do that” she said smiling.
I assume that as she has 23 years worth of Childminding under her belt that this is good.
As we set off across the playground to collect the 5 year old we celebrate in our own special way; I tell him loudly that he’s great, he looks all embarrassed.
Later when he was getting into bed he said to me “Mummy, I did my own coat zip today, give me a high five” and raised his hand.
We high fived. Never one to do things my halves he slapped me as hard as he could … and again … and again.
“Did [Mrs Childminder] high five you earlier?” I ask.
He said “No, she’s too old”

Thats lovely! Never under estimate the huge importance of a little thing like zipping up a coat! At school in Boyo’s reception they get a certificate when this feat is achieved

I reckon I’m pushing the high five age limit!
We like to shout ‘Duuuude!’ when we high five. That’s me and the boy of course, not me and the husband……well maybe sometimes.

Way to go! Wish Joe could do his coat up, at the moment he’s excelling in treading in dog shit.
Your blog cracks me up!

3 year old are the new 5….so smart!! I think 3 is great for zipping….I luv independence….My fifteen year old son is currently baking my cookies. I love it, a boy that bakes and a husband that cooks, and me a mom who just writes about it and occasionally does it!

Ha ha! Perhaps a low five would be more Mrs Childminder’s style?

That’s funny. You are never too old for a high five although my reaction times do seem to be getting slower and my daughter seems to be getting a lot more heavy-handed!

Proof indeed that you are never to old to be younger than your OAP childminder.

Hmm, yes you don’t want to give OAP Childminder high fives they have very birttle bones and might cause one to break…

Absolutely no one is never too old to high five!
