• 7th January 2010 - By Laura - AWNTYM?

Jodie at Mummy Mayhem has tagged me.

It’s simple, I have to list 10 things that make me happy.

At first I thought it would be difficult. Once I got thinking though I couldn’t stop and to be honest, it could have been a 50 things that make me happy list. Not wanting to bore you to tears I have whittled it back down to 10.

    1. The husband’s cooking - I really fell lucky in this respect when I met Mr Driver. Not only is he very handsome but he knows how to cook. In fact he’s very good indeed. His tapas is the best I’ve tasted. He cooks the most unbelievable curries and I salivate when I think about his beef wellington or his duck breast. Unfortunately he’s not interested in baking, so I have to get my cake fix elsewhere.

    2. Remembering pre children holidays with the husband - Particularly Edinburgh Festival and Barcelona. They were the best. Far too much laughter was had.

    3. The smell of creosote – Yes. I could seriously sniff creosote for hours on end. I love it. When I was pregnant with the 5 year old I would take the dog for a walk and linger at all the newly creosoted fences. The husband once lost me in Homebase only to find me loitering next to the cans of creosote trying to get their tamper proof seals off. Sad but true.

    4. Books - I like nothing more than having a mooch in a bookshop … the sort that let you just sit on the floor, make yourself at home and pore over books. Since having the children I don’t read as much as I’d like, but I always read before going to sleep. I have a pile of books waiting to be read. If I like a book I can’t bear to be parted from it and won’t even lend it to a friend. I hope to one day have a whole room of floor to ceiling shelves packed with books.

    5. My children - Just sniffing their heads is enough to make me happy, unless they haven’t had it washed in a while, but even then I could do a blindfolded sniff test and always pick out my children.

    6. A cold beer on a Summers evening - Whether it be on holiday or in the back garden there is nothing more refreshing or relaxing than feeling the last of the sun going down after a hot Summers day whilst holding an ice cold beer. That is all.

    7. Belly laughing - The sort of laughter that makes tears roll down your face and your stomach ache. It repeats on you every time you remember the moment. Of course the laughter lines appearing on my face are testament to that.

    8. My big little sister - Being with my sister, wherever we are always makes me feel at home, at peace with myself. She makes me happy.

    9. Freshly laundered sheets – For one night only, when they are freshly laundered.  Hotel sheets are good too, especially because they are changed every day and by someone else.

    10. Camping with my children - This year was the first time it was truly enjoyable. The children running wild in the fields, on the beach and just having a sense of freedom they don’t get at home. Then putting them to bed and stargazing. Just bliss

    So there’s my list. Now I have to tag ten people of my own to make the same list on their blog.  Here goes;

3 Bedroom Bungalow, Brits in Bosnia, Clarey Babble, Diary of a Surprise Mum, Four Down Mum To Go, Lost in Translation, Milk Breath & Margaritas, Maternal Tales From the South Coast, Ready to Wait & Island Mum of 2 (or 3 if you count their Dad)

Thank you for tagging me! I like your list. To me, numbers 1-10 would just be sleep just now.

Looking forward to reading your list! Yes, sleep … what’s that again?

    • Rookiemommy on January 7, 2010

Nothing clever to say – just had to comment to say what a lovely post this is. Super.

I have a think for solvent smells, which developed when I was pregnant with MiniMad, before then I couldnt even bear to go to the fuel station and then all of a sudden I wanted to fill up the car and sniff away!! It hasnt left me thoug, I love the smell of dielsel, petrol, alchol handwash in the hospital too – very sad

      • admin on January 7, 2010

Ooh no, not petrol … I do like a bit of Tarmac though!

      Lovely post.
      Really got me thinking.
I did a ‘grateful’ list at the end of December.
I quite like the list thing.
      xx

I like lists although, like I said, I could go on forever!

      Lovely!

I’m amazed, reading these lists, how many of the lists I relate to myself.

Although, I have to admit I have no idea what creosote is. Must be an English thing? Either that, of I just don’t spend enough time at the Hardware store. ;)

Thanks for such a beautiful list!

People paint their fences with creosote to weather proof it. Such a Luuuurrrrvely smell.

I craved the smell of petrol and rubber when pregnant (Halfords tyre section was favourite). I told my midwife who looked at me like I was mental!

      Can’t wait to do no.10

      • admin on January 7, 2010

OMG had forgotten about Halfords. When I was pregnant with the 3 year old we bought the teenager a bike and I spent far too much time sniffing the tyres. Also … cough … the innard of a school pump/plimpsol.

        No 10 is great fun!

    • English Mum on January 7, 2010

Lovely post! I’m with you on the creosote – reminds me of my youth, for some reason. Me and Mr English always have a ridiculous competition to see who can get into the fresh bed first too :)

      • admin on January 7, 2010

Well you know, you can paint my fence any day …

    • Rosie Scribble on January 7, 2010

Lovely Laura! I originally read one as ‘camping up my children’ which made me laugh. Nothing wrong with that of course but obviously you were saying something different!

      • admin on January 7, 2010

Well, to be honest the 3 year old likes nothing more than camping it up with the 5 year old’s dressing up clothes. He makes a good Princess.

    • Helen T on January 7, 2010

Great list, just off to mop up slight leakage from eyes. But then getting over emotional might be on my list ;)

    • Mamma Po on January 7, 2010

Ooh, I’m with you on the books and sheets, big time. Especially sheets, mmm, don’t get me started. Almost worth the 30 minutes it takes to iron our Emperor size duvet cover. But enough already, will complete the post over at mine shortly…thank you for the tag, will be fun to trawl my happy-memory bank.

    • Brit In Bosnia on January 8, 2010

Good one! Thanks for the tag, I’m thinking of my list already.

With you onthe sheets too. Such a luxury to sink into them for that first night clean sheet feeling. Which reminds me, I need to change ours. x

    • Jo Middleton on January 10, 2010

Hmmmm….. books….. I love them. Touching them, stroking them, smelling them… Just looking at a nicely organised case of books makes me feel happy. I like to arrange mine in colour order :-)

    • Insomniac Mummy on January 11, 2010

Belly laughing is good for the soul.

And the creosote? I now have an image of you walking down through the village sniffing fences like some sort of giant pregnant snail. Disturbing and funny all at once. For me not you. I’m sure. I’ll shut up.

      Adeiu.

      :D
